White Elephant Safari Lodge
South Africa [order]Surrounded by the Lebombo mountains and overlooking Lake Jozini, White Elephant Lodge is a welcome retreat for the weary traveller. Recently restored by the Khors family, the lodge is pioneering the elephant relocation project in the Pongola Game Reserve near the Swaziland border. Enjoy bush walks, boat trips and excellent tiger-fishing in this unspoilt region. Mixed habitats mean birdlife is prolific and well known Zululand reserves, including Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, are nearby.
Gorgeous accommodation is in 8 luxurious safari tents surrounding a wonderful homestead, originally built in the 1920s. Decor is classic colonial with plenty of natural materials, muted colours and African artefacts. Youll spend hours trying to capture on film the splendid vistas. Safe to walk by yourself at night, this is a lodge in which to spend quiet moments savouring the smells, sights and sounds of Africa.
Accommodation is in eight plush safari-style tents, half canvas and half brick. Each is set in its own secluded spot in this unspoilt savannah. Luxury en-suite bathrooms, outdoor canvas showers, private verandas, ceiling fans, personal mini bars and tea and coffee making facilities complete the scene.
Harsh lines are softened with the use of soft muslin mosquito nets hung delicately from the huge four poster beds. Fine cotton bed linen cools the skin on hot summer nights. Dark African teakwood furniture and the creative use of impala horns for door furnishings, together with hand written notes and a small carved elephant on every dressing table completes the special ambience of this relaxing sanctuary.
More affordable accommodation - full board with one activity - can be found under the same management at the nearby White Elephant Bush Camp, a rustic retreat offering 1 honeymoon chalet, 5 en-suite thatched chalets and 1 family chalet. Full details on application.

Large and very comfortable lodge house complete with fabulous collection of African artefacts and antiquities.
Mosquito nets.
Luxury toiletries and soft towels provided.
Room service to tents available.
Torches for getting to tent and back after dark.
Complimentary car cleaning service.

HIGHS
Tying back the tent flaps to the en-suite bathroom before wallowing in the claw footed Victorian bath watching the African skies across the distant wetland. Early morning walks by Lake Jozini.
LOWS
Make sure you carefully zip up the tents at night otherwise you may find your sleep disturbed by a few unwelcome visitors of the small crawly variety. Although you'll hopefully see elephant, giraffe, impala, kudu, rhino and hippos, this is not the place for tracking big cats.
