La Couronne Hotel
South Africa [order]
Set on a hill above the historic village of Franschhoek, La Couronne is a small luxurious hotel and winery with fabulous sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards and mountains. Fruit and wine have been cultivated here since the 18th century when French Huguenots (many of them winemakers) fled to the Cape to escape religious persecution in France. The property was completely refurbished in the late 1990s to create this gracious and relaxing retreat.

La Couronne makes an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding Winelands, and Cape Town is less than an hour away. Guests can relax by the pool, enjoy a massage, and wine and dine in style. For those more active, the region offers horse rides, invigorating hikes, biking trails, trout fishing or golf. A superb new wine cellar built among the vineyards and orchards offers an excellent venue for special occasions and functions.

La Couronne has 24 bedrooms, all of which offer wonderful views of the mountains, vineyards and the Franschhoek valley. Each one is different but all are spacious, elegant and comfortable. The classical decor is predominantly white, cream and yellow with swathes of lined and inter-lined ivory curtains draped heavily on the floor and simple prints on the walls. Some are furnished with floral fabrics, giving an English manor look, while others are African-colonial in style.

Soft towelling bathrobes, slippers, Egyptian cotton sheets and down pillows add to the comfort. Satellite television, phones, cooling fans, air-conditioning, underfloor heating, full bathrooms with bathtub and shower, are standard features.

Many of the ground floor bedrooms have french doors leading out to the gardens, some have their own private garden. All the new wing rooms (Nos 11-20) have balconies. For families or those seeking extra space, the Pinotage Suite has a separate sitting room with sofa bed.

HIGHS

The stunning views (probably the best of any hotel in the area), the feeling of space and tranquility, the supremely comfortable rooms and professional service. The location - Franschhoek has the finest setting of the Winelands towns and is considered the culinary capital of the Cape.

LOWS

We were going to say that if you decided to dine elsewhere in Franschhoek, you would need to drive or take a taxi (La Couronne is a couple of kilometres away from the village centre), but they have thought of everything - even providing a complimentary shuttle service to and from the other restaurants!
