Lodges & accommodation

All lodges are small and exclusive, and some of them are located in private concession areas only accessed in our own vehicles or aircraft, which makes them ideal for a honeymoon or romantic breakaway.

Most properties accommodate a maximum of between 16 and 24 people. Chobe Game Lodge, is the only permanent lodge built within the Chobe National Park and has 46 rooms.

Despite the remote locations lodges, all rooms (and in some cases tents), have the comforts one would expect from a modern hotel - en suite bathrooms, walk in showers, flush toilets, and in some of our properties, air conditioned rooms and where air conditioning is not available, overhead fans. Our aim is to make your stay as comfortable as possible so such amenities as tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms and hair dryers are provided for. Each lodge is very different and we are able to offer a choice of tented or brick and thatch accommodation depending on your preference.

Most of our lodges rely on generator power and 12-volt batteries for lighting at night, but in some cases we have permanent power via underground cables. Whatever the case, the chances are that you won't even notice!

At Chobe Game Lodge all electricity at the lodge is supplied via the national grid, and power is available 24 hours a day. Video cameras can be recharged in guest rooms. AC 220 V.

Travel between lodges

Part of the excitement of visiting these Lodges, is the getting around! We offer a fully integrated private air charter service, operated by our subsidiary company which operates 2 caravan turbine aircraft, 1 twin engine GOE Islander aircraft, 5 Cessna 206 aircraft, and 2 Airvan aircraft. All these are specifically designed for "bush" operations. The complement of 8 professional pilots from New Zealand, United Kingdom, South Africa and Botswana is headed by Operations Manager Dan MacAllister who has been in Botswana all his life. Some of our lodges have their own private airstrips. "Unless a private charter is requested, your flight transfers have been booked on a "seat on plane" basis. Flight times are arranged according to each day's requirements and to fit in with activities, thus the plane may pick up and drop off other guest's en-route to your destination. Times therefore vary from day to day and will be communicated to you the afternoon before departure. Flights to Kasane for the Chobe lodges and for Victoria Falls/Livingstone depart early to meet the scheduled road transfers; so early morning activities for guests departing on these flights are curtailed. Should you wish, private charters can be arranged, in which case you will be the only guests in the plane and you may specify your departure times. We are happy to quote separately for private charters."

The Experience

While staying at the lodges, everything is geared around the best game viewing times, specific to each lodge. Days start very early, sometimes at sunrise and often finish late in the evening. This is to utilize the best times to view game - so often the middle part of the day is free for relaxation which is why all our lodges have swimming or plunge pools with sun decks. All our lodges are also equipped with well-stocked libraries and comfortable lounges to relax in. Smoking is not permitted in any of our safari vehicles, but is allowed in sections of the lodge.

Safari Activities

Chobe Game Lodge offers game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles, game viewing by motorboat or sunset cruise on the Chobe River.
Stargazing is also available on request.
Game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles in the Savute area, including the Savute Marsh and a visit to the ancient San rock paintings at Gubatsa Hills.
Xugana Island lodge offers mokoro trips in eco-friendly dugout canoes, combined with walking, to surrounding lagoons and islands in the concession give you a classic Delta safari. Bird watching opportunities are outstanding, and fishing for bream and tiger fish is also offered.
Morning and evening game drives are offered at Leroo la Tau lodge.

Guides & staff

We are fortunate to have many long serving staff that is the envy of other lodge operators in Botswana. All guides are local Batswana, recruited from nearby villages and some of them have "worked through the ranks" from trainee level right through to fully qualified guides. John Kata of Camp Okavango is our longest serving guide.

Credit cards

Visa, MasterCard and Diners Club credit cards are accepted, but not American Express.

Our responsibilities

All lodges are governed by strict environmental standards and in many cases we exceed the basic requirements as far as waste disposal, game management, care of the natural environment goes. We employ a fully qualified environmentalist to ensure that our lodges are as ecofriendly as possible. Every aspect of our operation is monitored in terms of environmental impact. All waste, other than food waste, which is composted and combustible litter, which is incinerated, is packaged and transported from the remote camps into the closest town. Gas is used for heating and cooking. Mokoro's used for activities are all fibreglass - not wood.

Your Safety

Your safety is our primary concern, which is why certain procedures must be followed while staying at lodges. Very few lodges have fences and movement around the lodges in the evenings is restricted and our guides will escort you to your accommodation. While on game activities it is essential to listen to our guides who will not only advise you of the wonders of the bush, but the hidden dangers too!

Baggage Restrictions

Due to the nature of travel in light aircraft, with the emphasis on safety and space concerns, baggage is restricted to 20 kgs per person including hand luggage. This baggage must be soft sided (duffel type bags), to allow for it to be packed properly. If you do have extra bags or have suitcases heavier than the specified allowance, we must be advised in advance as soon as the booking is made so we can make arrangements for the baggage to be transferred or stored at cost.

Health precautions/ vaccinations / important info

Vaccination requirements change from time to time and we suggest clients consult their local doctor or health department for the latest health precautions. Malaria including Plasmodium falciparum exists in certain areas. All clients must consult with their own MD or the Centre for Disease Control regarding the use of anti-malarial tablets prior to departure. There are many brands available and we recommend that clients consult their doctor, health clinic or health department as to which brand they should take. For walking activities at Xugana Island Lodge & Camp Okavango, a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Communications

Our guests love the fact that they can get away from it all and visibly relax in camp knowing that their phones won't ring and nobody can contact them, so it is truly an authentic "get away from it all" experience with no interruptions to hinder their safari experience.

There is no cell phone coverage at Savute Safari Lodge or Xugana Island Lodge. Clients can be contacted via radio from our Maun operations office. Internet access is available only at Chobe Game Lodge. Please take note that there is cell phone coverage at Chobe Game Lodge as well as Leroo La Tau. We do not allow cell phones in public areas or on game drives.
